Loane Bobillier | Squaring The Circle

Opening Night

Thursday 2nd March 2023 | 5:30-8:30pm

The apparently insoluble question of how to square a circle has occupied the minds of mathematicians since the time of Hippocrates. It is from this mathematical problem that we derive the phrase squaring the circle; the combining of things that were thought to be so contradictory to each other that they could not exist together.

Loane Bobillier is a 22 year old International student at Leeds Arts University. Hailing from Switzerland and arriving on these shores via China and Singapore, her work, geometric and minimal on the surface, reveals something of the experiences that lie just beneath the surface for those who care to investigate further.

Working across a variety of media including sculpture, photography, painting and film, her artworks are a meditation on identity, belonging and the inner conflict that occurs as we attempt to position ourselves in the context of the external environment.

About Loane Bobillier

As a Swiss national, Loane Bobillier grew up most of her life away from home, having her junior years surrounded by Asian culture. From the age of four her family moved to Shanghai, China but the multicultural life did not end there as she moved to Singapore five years later to grow up and finish her high school studies. The common denominator between all this change in Loane's life would be her passion for the arts, choosing Art as a subject in GCSE's, following this with Art & Design for A Level studies and finally a move to Leeds Arts University to study a bachelors of Fine Art.

In her work Loane explores themes of self-identity, belonging and an interest in formal qualities within geometric shapes often contrasted with an organic element. Working closely with organic material like clay, wood and metals there is a broad diversity of material understanding in the body of work presented by the artist.
