Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
— W.B Yeats

Back when I had just left university, in the not so dim and distant past of 2003, space for art projects in the city centre was at a premium. It was not difficult to find a central location that was between occupants, in which you could present work and know that because of that location you could get a decent footfall. Fast forward nineteen years to 2022 and the situation is much different. The centre has shifted marginally to the undercover location of Trinity, as opposed to the outdoor area that it bounds the southern edge of. When the question is asked ‘do you know of any good spaces in the city centre that students could take over for a week the answer is less clear. In fact the answer from my point of view is no, I actually don’t know anywhere any more.

Out here in the perimeter there are no stars
— The Doors

And so it is that as we head towards the end of the year Basement prepares to welcome a 1st Year student group from Leeds Arts University out here to the perimeter that is South Leeds. It is time to throw a handful of stars at the roof of the world to provide some light and guide the way.
